Does Green tea prevent cancer?

Green tea and cancer

Recent studies have brought to light the many cancer preventing qualities of green tea.

The rich content of antioxidants in green tea neutralizes the free radicals and safeguards the body against cancer cells.

Overwhelming scientific evidence can now back the claim that regular consumption of green tea strengthens the body’s defence mechanism against cancer.

Clinical research on green tea indicates that its leaves have high levels of anti-cancer compounds which are enough to thwart the growth of cancerous cells.

The same research also established that drinking around four cups of green tea in a day could supply the body with a sufficient amount of anti-cancer compounds to fight against malignant cells.

How can green tea help to prevent cancer?

1. Green tea is full of natural Antioxidants

The high levels of antioxidants in green tea act as a scavenger against a certain substance called the ROS (Reactive oxygen species).

These are free radicals, which when produced in excess, can damage healthy cells and tissue in the body.

The anti-oxidant properties of green tea leaves attack these free radicals and destroy them, removing toxins and preventing future damage.

2. Green tea contains EGCG Polphenols

Green tea also contains a substance known as EGCG which binds itself with an enzyme, and as a result stops the growth of cancer cells. Scientists have discovered that EGCG is very similar in structure to a cancer drug called methotrexate.

It was also found that EGCG fights cancer cells in the same way as the cancer drug. However, a major advantage is that EGCG does not attack healthy cells as aggressively, and hence saves the body from the many negative side effects of conventional cancer treatments.

3. Green tea can block cancer growth

Another interesting fact about green tea is that it has the ability to block the growth of a certain molecule known as Aryl Hydrocarbon (AH), which is instrumental in the development of cancer cells.

Researchers of the Rochester University confirm that green tea contains two phytochemicals which restrict AH activity in the body.

Green tea and cancer conclusion

Green tea contains numerous cancer-fighting compounds and could explain why cancer rates in the Eastern part of the world (where green tea is traditionally consumed) are so low.

Even today, new research is being undertaken into Green Tea's positive effects on treating and preventing cancer, and new health benefits are still being discovered.

Scientists believe that organically grown Green tea contains higher concentrations of antioxidants than Green tea which has been intensively farmed.

One of the best Green Teas currently available is Tava Tea - which uses 100% organic leaves in pyramid shaped tea bags.
